Round Table on Preserving and Developing Sharivka Palace and Park Complex

Round Table on Preserving and Developing Sharivka Palace and Park Complex

On November 18, 2014 the faculty and students of the Department of Travel Business participated in the round-table discussion about saving, preserving, and developing Sharivka palace and park complex.

Among the participants of the meeting there were representatives of the public, business, and tourism sector, historians, restorers, representatives of the Departments of Culture and Tourism of the district state administrations and Kharkiv Regional State Administration.

We would like to remind you that the charitable foundation Omriina Kraina is now entering into a lease agreement about the territory of Sharivka palace and park complex for the term of 25 years. Oleksii Tolkachov, Head of the Foundation, enumerated the works of first priority, and presented plans of creating an international center for culture and art on the basis of Sharivka palace.

First of all, the Foundation intends to prevent further destruction of the park and the palace by repairing the roof of the palace and the guardhouse, dampproofing the foundations, installing the system of sewage disposal. The palace and the buildings belonging to the palace and park complex are to be thoroughly disinfected after hosting the tuberculosis sanatorium. Electricity and central heating systems are to be fixed. Only after that the palace can be opened for visitors.

“All in all, by the preliminary estimates the palace renovation requires 40-50,000,000 UAH, and another 15-20,000,000 UAH will cover the park renovation. Mostly expenses on maintaining the whole complex total 50,000 UAH. However, the preliminary works to stop the destruction require only 1,000,000 UAH. All the renovation works in the palace are expected to be over within 10 years, and the park is going to be restored within 3-5 years,” said Mr. Tolkachov.

We want people coming to Sharivka to stay there for the whole day. That will provide for an infrastructure encouraging the local residents to take up selling souvenirs or running restaurant business. Along with Sharivka palace we are determined to promote and renew the whole touring path. There is a wonderful palace, a splendid dendropark in Krasnokutsk; singing terraces and a museum in Parkhomovka,” added Mr. Tolkachov.

The renovated palace will host concerts, festivities, museum expositions, conferences. There are also plans to introduce boat trips and horse riding on the territory of the palace and park complex. All the works will be covered by the charitable foundation Omriina Kraina and the specially created enterprise International Culture and Art Center of Sharivka Palace.

For reference. Sharivka is a landmark of palace and park architecture of Ukraine, a landmark of national value. It occupies a park zone of 39.3 ha, which belongs to municipal property. The complex was built by Cossack captain of Okhtyrka regiment Matvii Sharyi. At different times the owners of Sharivka park were such landowners as Olkhovskyi, the Hebenstreins, Kenig. In the Soviet Union and post-Soviet years the palace hosted a sanatorium for people sick with tuberculosis. Within the framework of the program on restoring architectural landmarks, in 2009 a decision was made to restore the unique palace, and turn it into a museum or a entertainment center.
