AI LAUNCHPAD: YOUR JOURNEY INTO ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Welcome to "AI Launchpad" (3 ECTS). The focus is on building a solid understanding of what AI is, its real-world applications, its current capabilities and limitations, and the critical considerations surrounding its development and use. The structure and presentation of this course information draw inspiration from established practices for outlining academic programs, ensuring clarity and comprehensiveness for prospective participants.

This course specifically caters to individuals – including students, professionals, and lifelong learners – who possess an interest in AI but lack prior specific knowledge or technical skills in comput er science, programming, or advanced mathematics. The primary goal is to equip participants with the conceptual knowledge and basic practical skills needed to engage with AI tools effectively and critically evaluate their outputs, fostering informed and responsible interaction with this transformative technology.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will possess the knowledge and skills to:

  • Define Artificial Intelligence and trace its historical development and key milestones.
  • Describe the fundamental concepts and main categories of AI (e.g., Narrow AI, AGI conceptual overview, ML/DL conceptual overview).
  • Identify and explain diverse applications of AI across various sectors using concrete examples (e.g., Healthcare, Finance, Entertainment, Education).
  • Recognize the current limitations and challenges associated with AI technologies, including bias and ethical concerns (e.g., "Black Box" problem, impact of biased data).
  • Understand basic methods for evaluating the results produced by AI systems (conceptually, e.g., accuracy, relevance, helpfulness).
  • Identify and differentiate between various existing AI tools and platforms designed for different tasks (e.g., LLMs/Chatbots, Image Generators, specialized tools).
  • Understand basic metrics used to describe AI performance or characteristics (explained conceptually).
  • Compare AI tools from different providers based on their intended use, accessibility, and general capabilities (focusing on user experience).
  • Grasp the core principles of prompt engineering for interacting effectively with generative AI models.
  • Craft basic, effective prompts for common tasks and iteratively refine them.
  • Discuss potential future developments and the societal impact of AI.
  • Access and utilize further learning resources on AI.

The blend of objectives targeting both conceptual understanding (defining, describing, understanding, discussing) and practical skills (identifying, comparing, crafting, evaluating) reflects the course's dual aim: to impart foundational knowledge while simultaneously empowering learners to become active, informed users and critical consumers of AI technology.
