Famous Polish Economist Leszek Balcerowicz Awarded Docteur Honoris Causa of Karazin University

Karazin University was visited by the famous polish scientist, economist, politician and reformer Leszek Balcerowicz. One of the items on the agenda was a ceremony of awarding Professor L. Balcerowicz the title of Doctor Honoris Causa of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University.

The title is the highest scientific decoration of the University awarded to outstanding national and foreign scientists, public figures, workers of science, education, culture and art.

The guests of honor attending the solemn event were Deputy Head of Kharkiv Regional State Administration Yurii Sapronov and Consul General of Poland in Kharkiv Jan Granat.

“Karazin University has always devoted considerable attention to development of Ukrainian-Polish relations, particularly in cultural and academic spheres, and the work accomplished by the Ukrainian-Polish Center for Science and Culture of the University speaks volumes. We are glad to have such a distinguished scientist as Leszek Balcerowicz join the academic pleiad of the University,” pointed out University President Vil Bakirov.

After the solemn ceremony Professor Leszek Balcerowicz had a meeting with students and faculty members of the University giving them a lecture “Post-Communist Transitions to a Market Economy in Comparative Perspective”. The lecture outlined the current state of the economic system in the countries of Central Eastern Europe which for a while developed under socialism; described institutional trajectories characteristic of the countries that have given up the socialist state system; emphasized interdependence between democracy and capitalism; dwelled on free trade and competitiveness. At the end of the lecture the professor singled out the main factors affecting the economic growth rate in the countries, namely: initial conditions, external events, access to markets, geographical location, level of market reforms and nature of macroeconomic policy.
